Running engine without drive belt?

Is it advisable to run the engine(for tuning purposes) without the drive belt in place? Does the engine need the drive load of the differential/rear wheels (raised from ground) to allow tuning and smooth running? Thanks

I do not beleive it is good for your drive clutch to slam all the way open with the belt off. I beleive the prefered method is to jack the rear wheels up and run it that way.

I second that cjpenny89. Without the belt, the clutch could be damaged when slamming shut. In an extreem case, it could even through parts

Also - what on earth do you need to tune???? There is only one carb screw and you just set it and forget it.
