48v charger for 1999 G19

Postby RossB » Sun Nov 01, 2009 10:38 am

Brand new to the site here. A friend pointed me in this direction. Lots of great info here! :D

Complete cart rookie. I picked up my first cart yesterday: 1999 G19.
It's been sitting unused for 2yrs, so I'm pretty sure the batteries are shot. I have a question on the 48v(SCR481717) charger that came with it. How do I detemine if the charger is functional? I understand that it will not come on if the cart batteries are toast. If it is not plugged into the cart, when I plug the charger into the wall outlet, should it hum or make any noise at all? This one does not.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Any ideas on where I can find a operators manual for the charger? I have found wiring diagrams for the both cart and charger, but a manual only for the cart.

Thanks,
Ross

I just got the same exact cart as well last week. It was already charged, so I never plugged it in. If you'd like, I'll plug it in and let you know if the charger makes any humming noise.

I didn't get a manual with mine either

Best of luck with your new cart !!

The G19E should have came with the MAC charger. These chargers had several issues with them such as being noisey, due to shim wear inside the transformer. The car has to have at least 42 volts for the charger to come on. Also, take the handle apart and check the pins, they had a issue with them burning into. If you have any other things you would like to know about the Yamaha product, please feel free to contact me in the tech department here at Buggies Unlimited. I was with Yamaha for 21 years.

Thanks for the replies. I will likely take you up on the offer in the future. I'm in the exploratory phase of doing my first cart. Alot of info to get your mind around.

When I plug the charger into the cart, whether it's plugged into a wall outlet or not, all the lights on the charger flash on/off at about 1 sec intervals. I've already had one "shock" with this cart having 8v batteries...didn't realize there was anything but 6v or 12v. First quote on new batts I got today was $150 each  ...was not ready for that. If this charger were bad, that might would push me over the edge!

The batteries in the car initiate the charger cycle. The lights should go 3 rotations before the charger begins the charging cycle.

If it hums, is it a big deal? Is it just a noisy charger, or is something wrong with it?

The handle - the CARRYING handle? Something burning into it? Can you explain?

Finally - Are you better off running the cart for a while and pretty much almost discharging the batteries, or should you re-charge every time you use it?

The reason that I ask is that I see the LED battery gauge ( fuel gauge ... LOL ) that shows how low your batteries are. Are these to not only help you to keep from running out, but to also to help determine when to re-charge?

Thanks Barry !!

Humming, they all do it, just at different tones. ITs the wires inside the transformer viberating. If you are not on the car driving it, put it onto charge. Never run the batteries all the way down! Your killing them! Little bit at a time is sooo much better for them.

WOW so I should leave the charger on all of the time ( all winter? )

Would a trickle type charger be better for this?

Thanks for the quick responses Barry

You can leave the charger on continuously. Only time it will fail is if the power goes out. Then it will have to be unplugged and replugged to restart the system. Out battery maintainer will also do good for this situation of leaving for a while. Someone still need to check the water if anything is left on it at least once every three weeks.

Thanks for the heads up !!
The maintainer might be the way to go as I'm sure it'll use less electricity huh

The battery maintainer would be the way to go. The charger will not reset by itself if the power goes out and the maintainer will.

Hey Barry

How about if I just put the cart charger on a timer to come on and charge for about an hour or two a day? Would that work?

Thanks !!

Nope, won't work. The charger has to be unplugged from the car to be reset when power has been disconnected. If the charger is left on the car, when the battery voltage drops, the charger comes on, unless the power has went out. Then it has to be physically unplugged and replugged to rerset. The maintainer will reset itself if the power goes out.

How can I tell if the charger that I have is indeed a MAC charger?

It doesn't really say anything on it as far as a manufacturer goes. It's basically a silver box with a handle on top and it has Yamaha written on the front as well a a big 48 V with the word CHARGER written in a circle around it all in blue letters.

Is that a MAC?

I just want to make sure that I don't cook my batteries by leaving them plugged in all of the time.

Thanks !!
