Governer adjustments on 02 or 03 motors

I just bought a 2002 or 2003 gas E Z Go. It has the 2 cylinder 295 motor in it and is quite slow. I want to adjust the governer but i heard if u adjust it too much, you can float the valves or really damage the motor. Anyone out there know how to properly adjust the governer to get the absolute most out of the motor w/o damaging it? And any other adjustment to get a lil more power out of the motor(if there is any) would be appreciated. Thanx.
