First Timer 84 Gas Club Car

Postby 76roadrunner » Wed Oct 14, 2009 9:40 pm

I would like to say hello to everyone and introduce myself. My name is Ken. I bought a 1984 Gas Club Car DS. This is my first cart. I am mechanically inclined but have no experience with golf carts. I figured I would ask a few questions and then go and read and get familiar with the board. Maybe my questions are already answered here.

Well to start off, the cart seems to have trouble with the clutches. When I push the gas peddle it lurches, jumps, skips and turns the tires. When I get it going at high speed it has a clicking sound (like a playing card in the spokes of a bicycle) then bogs down and will not accellerate any faster. The cart has very good power on flat ground but struggles on step grades of paved asphault. I have also noticed that it seems that the driven clutch is sticking and doesn't engage properly all the time (I'm taking liberty here because I don't know anything about golf carts so maybe I have the driven and drive clutch trouble mixed up). I think that one clutch is supposed to contract and the other is to expand in order to provide power and then torque when climbing a steep grade. I need to call buggies unlimited and get a service and parts manual. I will try to do this in the morning tomorrow. They look like they are very expensive though.

I guess my questions are these, Can you guys let me know if this is a clutch problem and what to do if it is,? should I buy the manuals? Is this a more sinister problem with the transmission? Is this a less sinister problem that can be solved with a rebuild kit or just lubrication? As I said, I am mechanically inclined but have no experience with golf carts. I may be assuming that the clutches are the trouble and be completely wrong.

I thank you all very much in advance and am looking forward to joining you in an enjoyable hobby and for me maybe a new passion. I would also like to know if you guys think that I should cut my losses and trade it for a newer model? The trouble is, no matter what your answer is, I think I have the Buggie Bug!!

Thanks again, Ken.

PS - Me again, are there any specialty tools that I should have to remove the clutches if necessary?

Thanks again, Ken.

I don't know anything about the 84. I have a 2007 and a 2004. The 2004 was under the gulf in Hurricane Ike. I just got through rebuilding it. I didn't know anything about carts before, but I found worlds of info on this site - see Resources section. I purchase the service manual and supplement for both carts and the parts manual for the 2004 at my local CC dealer. I couldn't have done the rebuild without the 2004 manuals.

Thank you for the reply, I do have a local golf cart dealer but they told me they do not share manuals and they would order them (from BU). They were no help so I am on my own here. No problem, I'll get it figured out and fixed. I'll buy the manuals that I need.
I thank you very much for the reply. I am hoping that I can get more info about my clutch problem (or if it is not a clutch problem). I haven't searched the board yet and have little time tonight to do that.
I'll see if I can get some more info if anyone has one of these older carts. I am also wondering about any specialty tools that I may need. Do you have any advice on that?
I thank you very much for your reply. I'll talk to you again, Ken.

I know what it is like to be on your own, but you can do this. There is much help on here, as for the clutch, yes there is a special puller for the drive clutch. ( the front one) I have not had that one off yet, but I would take it off and try cleaning it out before I bought one. The manual would be a nice addition. I have taken the driven clutch off of several of these to put the power spring in. It is not to hard of a job, I would take it off and clean it also. I have much to learn still, but I will help you if I can. Also welcome to the Forum.

Thank you Earl for the boost of confidence.

I got the cart last year and ordered some stuff from BU. I kept it at a camper in the mountains and only drove it over the summer when I was there. Then I started having this issue so I brought the cart home and joined the forum. I have been working a lot (which is a good thing in this time) but haven't been able to spend as much time with it as I thought I would be able to. I am going to take your suggestion that having the manuals is a good idea and call BU today,

I still need to get around to searching the boards, hopefully that will work out for me today or tomorrow. I am going to try to take the clutches apart before I buy new ones because what do I have to lose? (except an eye). I will make sure I have them clamped well incase that is an issue. I did see the tool for disassembly.

Thank you for your reply, looking forward to talking again.

P.S. - I probably missed it, I am still new to the board, what cart do you have and what are your plans for it?

I have a 94 CC,m and a 2000 Ezgo. I have big plans and a little wallet, so for now my goal is to just keep them running.

Hello everyone, just posting to say I am still here and interested. My work schedule is brutle right now and I haven't had time to work on the cart or search the threads. Thank you for your info, hopefully I can get some time on Friday. It doesn't look like I am going to get to the cart until after Thanksgiving. I know there is good info on this site. If anyone has time to direct me to the threads I should look at first, I would appreciate the help.

Thanks again, Ken.

Hello Ken!.. Sounds like the driven clutch to me! Check the clutch slides to make sure that they are not wore out or in some cases i have seen that one of them is missing all together. I have had the jumping or chattering issue on my cart before and i noticed that the slides were wore and one them was completly gone! Keep us posted :)
