Another 2006 Precedent charger question

Postby shortspark » Fri Nov 06, 2009 4:36 pm

I posted a question about my batteries here a few days ago. Now I have noticed something different is going on with my charger. It use to be that when I plugged in the charger the needle would go all the way to the right, then after about a second or two, it would return to zero and then immediately go back to the right and start the charge cycle. I read the manual and the initial "back and forth" of the needle is some sort of computerized check of the system before it actually begins to charge.

I just noticed in the past two days (although it certainly could have been going on longer), that when I plug the charger to the cart, there is no "back and forth" or diagnostic check being made. The needle goes all the way to the right and never returns. It seems like it is charging right away without doing what ever test it use to make. What could have changed things? The batteries, although weak probably due to age (four years old) are charged up in the morning and get me through a round of golf. That the charger is no longer doing its "test" before charging tells me something is wrong but I don't know what it might be. Any ideas?

The charge is imediately detecting low voltage. The older the batteries, the longer it will take to charge the batteries and themore water it will use. If you have the 4 twelve volt batteries, be prepared to change them and for sticker shock!

Did not know the Precedent model did the self diagnostic check, this would include all IQ operating systems

How right you are! I live on a course and down the road is a Club Car dealer where I bought my cart. I went in yesterday and he said to replace those four would cost $210 a battery. That includes pick-up, installation and delivery back to me. I asked him if they were Trojans and he said he gets them from Club Car on an order by order basis and he does not know what they are (strange). He said Club Car told him they were not Trojans but even better batteries (again, strange).

I can buy the Trojan T-1275 and put them in myself for $189 a piece. Still very high but at least I know what I am getting. Then again, I may get the cheapos from Sams and cross my fingers.

But to get back to what you said about the charger, you are saying that because the batteries are so weak and the voltage is so low that the charger is not capable of reading it, therefore it is not able to do the test?

If the batteries are weak the charger won`t turn on.The diagnostic test that no longer takes place is probably a function of the OBC

Thanks, I think I better have the OBC checked before I do anything.

I needed batteries too and I bought the Interstate 12V marine batteries and couldn't be happier. They are stronger and the run time is half again better than the black Club Car batteries. I paid $88 a piece for them.

I checked those out. They want $98 for them where I am but that is still a lot better than the $190 they want for Trojan T-1275. I might end up with Interstate or Sams golf cart batteries. I really don't think the Trojans can be twice as good.

Club Car no longer uses the 12volt battery as of a few months ago.All presedents and DS cars now have 6x8 volt batteries.

Club car designed the black batteries that came in the precident, but the Trojan designed battery is Red and is alot better battery than the black one.
